Hi everyone. I found your site the other day and made this character a few hours ago. I've never really rped outside of an MMO before so let me know of I'm doing something wrong!!
Era: World Without End
Name: Aaraken. Pronounced "AIR uh kin" but can also be pronounced "ARE uh ken", "a RAH kin"
Sex: Male
Age: He'll rarely say, but he looks to be no older than 11
Appearance: The first thing you'll probably notice about this kid is his hair. It's straight, going down to his neck without reaching his shoulders. It often covers his eyes, causing him to flick it away or shake his head so he can see. His hair fades into three different colours. At the root, and a bit outward, his hair is an orangish red, like copper, but more dull, almost like rust. The majority goes from orange to golden, and at the tips it quickly shifts into a pale white like a young golden retriever. His eyes are identical in colour to the roots of his hair and seem to shine regardless of surrounding light, almost as if they have a gentle glow. Coupled with the faintly noticeable bags under his eyes, it's hard to tell if this kid is cute or creepy. His skin is light brown, too dark to be tanned but not quite natural looking. The contrast between his mostly blonde hair and his darkish skin gives him an almost otherwordly vibe. Other than these anomalies, nothing about the child looks very intimidating. The boy is short, there's no denying it, and he has an average, unathletic build. He has a very innocent, childish face marred only by the dark circles and small bags under his eyes, evidence of stress and lack of sleep.
Aaraken's clothing is just as strange as he is. He has multiple outfits, but they all have the same general vibe. His garb is an exotic, colourful mess, and reflects a twisted child's sense of "fashion". His more casual clothes include a collared shirt and shorts, but even these have a few odd markings and runes dotting the surface. Hanging from his clothes are always strange trinkets attached by metal cords: shrunken monster heads, metal shards, beads, charms, and medallions all giving him the look of some sort of techno-savage. He also wears various pieces of ancient jewelry, arm-bands, necklaces, and bracelets. At times, he wears a hollowed out metal head skull, which he modified to act as a gas mask as well as to make him look "scarier". The entire outfit makes him look like he's a mysterious foreigner: the exact look he's going for. The most consistent aspect of his apparel are the blue-tinted lab goggles on his forehead and his fingerless gloves.
Posture: Aaraken rarely stands still for long. He's always darting about, with a small smile on his face. It's difficult to tell what's behind the smile, be it innocence or deviousness. His movements are cartoonish, exaggerated, and erratic. Beneath his often silly demenour lies a darker side to his behaviour. His head often jerks around as if he hears something horrible, and his eyes widen every now and then, like he's staring at something terrifying. He also has a bit of a feminine gait and stance at times, likely things he subconciously picked up by being raised around females. He'll likely deny this if you point it out though. He'll almost always be found chewing some sort of candy, be it a candy bar he found, or some (likely dangerous) dessert he made in his lab. He uses small machines in his clothing that allow him to gently hover a few feet off the ground. He can't fly like those with eco-wings, but he can comfortably float around when the mood strikes him. Aaraken is left-handed, and quite proud of that fact, making a point of using his left-hand as much as possible.
Personality: First and foremost, Aaraken is a kid. He's playful, mischievious, and plays pranks. He's friendly (at times), has a silly sense of humour, and can also be a bit moody. He often goes through extreme, comical lengths to accomplish things that seem trivial to most, like almost getting himself killed and spending countless orbs on a practical joke These traits tend to aggrivate those adults with little patience, particularly mercs and wastelanders with little love for childish antics. He's also, however, brilliant. He has a craving for knowledge that goes beyond childish curiosity. He knows of distant lands, ancient legends and lost peoples, and has a strong grasp on science and technology. At times it seems like he clings to his books and inventions like a normal child would cling to a blanket, seeking safety from something. He values his studies above everything else, be they morals or social norms, and isn't averse to doing something "wrong" in order to further his education. There are also times when he seems to be, quite frankly, insane. His mood tends to swing without warning, sometimes in mid sentence. On a good day, he may behave like a *somewhat* average boy, while on others, he may be blatantly violent and sadistic. He often goes from overly social to a misanthrope, and few people can follow where his mind goes. He's eccentric at the least, and psychotic at the most, an emotionally unstable child, with the mind of a genius, and this translates into his day to day life. His inventions are often the twisted realizations of childhood fantasies, many serving little practical purpose other than to please his young psyche. If he was a bit more mature, or had some guidance, he could likely achieve great things. He has a habit of...well...lying. He'll often make up stories about his past or his present, sometimes taking on fabricated personas simply to amuse himself. Above all, Aaraken's goal is to see what no one's seen, to learn the secrets of the past, to explore the deepest ruins and the farthest lands. With knowledge comes power, and power's always nice.....
Occupation: Aaraken is a scientist, a mystic, and a scholar, though strangers often laugh at this notion. Nevertheless, he is often sought after as a wilderness guide due to his love of exploration, or hired alongside mercenaries tasked with investigating ancient ruins or strange machines. He studies ancient tomes for hidden secrets, and delves into ancient ruins to sate his curiosity. His primary interest is precursor history and technology, but he knows of many other societies, both human and otherwise. He makes money through the practical application of his skills, be it by selling artifacts, making use of his inventions, or finding treasure in some lost city.
Abilities/Skills: Aaraken is a genius. He can create many machines and devices that are marvels of modern technology and magic. Even when these inventions serve no practical purpose, which they often don't, they are still wonders to behold. He may not be physically strong, but his speed and finesse in combat make up for this. He creates automatons to guard himself and his home, and the area around his "house" is littered with mechanical traps. He has very little muscle, but has picked up basic martial arts from precursor monks and other individuals he's met in his travels. He's most effective fighting from afar, shooting energy bolts with his gunspear, throwing vials of poisonous gas, and sicing his inventions on his enemies. If forced into close combat, he'll use his spear to keep his foes at bay. As he's often the guinea pig in his own experiments, his specific combat skills can temporarily change depending on what potions he's imbibed or cybernetic component he's testing, but he's only human, and a rather young one at that. If he's shot or stabbed a few times, he's probably going to die.
Powers: Aaraken utilizes blue eco in his inventions and his daily life. If threatened with close combat, he'll charge his spear with blue eco, or use it to increase his speed and escape.
Weapons: He carries a strange staff, a "gunspear" as he calls it. It is an old device of uncertain origin, with designs and ornaments from many different civilizations. The base-material seems to be precursor metal, with a curved, spear-like blade that sprouts from the top. The blade itself is split, and floating in between is a large, odd, gold-glowing gem of some sort, from which a blast of energy shoots forth. The shaft is absolutely covered in bizaare runes and swirling designs, some precursor, some not. Beads, shells, metal shards, and techno-barbaric trinkets hang carelessly from ribbon-like metal cords near the top of the shaft. These cords, along with said trinkets, can be "reeled in" to the staff if they get in the way, but they rarely do. The staff itself is collapsable, and rests in a pack on his back.
Relationships: Aaraken is ambivalent toward other people. In part from his mood swings, and in part by his treatment by his parents, he doesn't always trust adults. As a result he doesn't have many friends to speak of, and those he tries to make he doesn't keep for long due to his odd nature. At the same time he's a pretty lonely kid, and makes robots and computers that he treats like his pets.
History: Aaraken has had a rather difficult life so far. He lived in a rather upper-class family, but his parents were abusive in every way imaginable. They were both well educated scholars, but horrible individuals, neglecting and harming their son in unforgivable ways. As a result, he spent most of his time on the streets of Haven City, ironically seeking refuge with the poor and downtrodden, trying to stay off his parent's radar as much as possible. The one thing he claims his parents taught him was that with knowledge comes power, and with power comes freedom: a belief he's held onto ever since. When he was very young, during the Baron's reign, a group of nomadic, mostly female precursor monks smuggled themselves into the city for unknown reasons. For the few months they were there, they taught and took care of Aaraken like the parents he should have had. It was from them that he learned the basics of history and science. As they were his only role-models, he took after them quite a bit, and many of his more "normal" mannerisms are taken from these women. As a result, he has many feminine mannerisms, and hates when this is pointed out to him. Regretfully, they couldn't take him with them when they left the city. When the Baron fell shortly after, and the city opened up, more monks would go in and out of Haven on occassion, and Aaraken would always anticipate their visits. When the palace fell and war broke out, Aaraken was forced to spend more time at home. He refuses to speak to anyone about what happened during that time, but it ended with him escaping the city and making a home for himself in some precursor ruins out in the wild. Understandably, he doesn't like talking about his depressing upbringing, and instead makes up rediculous, often humorous, tales about his origins. After escaping, he began to teach himself. He'd scour the land for any scrap of knowledge he could obtain, be it a page from a dusty old tome, or a half-broken precursor computer. As his education grew, he became more self-sufficient. Where before he was barely surviving outside the city, he was now thriving. He built a water purifier in his home and rigged his "yard" with myriad traps. He gained a reputation with the local nomads and marauders, who were reluctant to go near the ruins where he lurked. Travellers would often find their supplies missing, taken by the "imp in the ruins" for his experiments. To the uneducated, he's a mysterious sorcerer. To scholars, he's a bizzare prodigy. Aaraken has explored many distant continents and civilizations, and when not on some expedition or archaeological dig, he can usually be found in his lab at home.
