Tonus tripped after hearing an explosion, landing on his face completely and covering his head as if he was expecting something to fall on him. Genesis skidded to a halt in front of the two men and looked onward. Genesis made a quick wave before grabbing both men and moving them into a nearby room.
"Well howdy there Zrion!" Genesis peeked out the doorway, "Long time no see, eh? How ya been besides trying to kill me now?"
"You know him?!" Tonus shouted, having a bit of difficulty getting back up from being thrust to the ground by a Metal Head.
"Well, yeah, he was the KG Spec ops guarding the convoy with that mechanized Genesis." Genesis looked back into the room with a smile.

Pyrius remebered the unknown experiment with the scientist once again, recalling a few names briefly spoken as his squad met with those who were to retrieve the delivery. Zrion was mentioned only twice, once on the first delivery, and then when plans for moving the experiment were being made. "We need to get going. Genesis, if you can hold them off for a bit that would be great!" He then turned to Tonus. "Twenty feet down the hall is a branch. The left hall takes us straight to the system. The right hall takes us to the fortress backup comms. That system has its own generator. The generator is linked to the main system. If it fails, an impulse is sent to the generator, activating it. It's weaker than the Main system, but it still connects all the systems. In otherwords, we need to take them both out. Which one you want?"

"Hold them off? Why don't you just ask me to put on a song and dance for them?" Genesis retorted sarcastically.
The Metal Head began to look around the room for anything he could use. Tonus just simply nodded to Pyrius and got ready to perform his usual hobble-run. Genesis began taking apart various cabinets, lockers, and anything else made of metal before applying the pieces in layers over various positions on the floor. bending most of the pieces with ease other one another until...
Genesis burst forth from the room with one funky looking helmet. To him, however, it was the best damn ram he'd ever got a hold of or made. The beast began to charge at Zrion and his men, not really thinking anything through, which at this point, he probably didn't even have a plan. Genesis' legs continued to carry onward, catching speed in a short amount of time, his ram threatening to flatten those unlucky enough to cross its path.
"Choo choo, mothafuckas! CHOO CHOO!"

"Incoming!" Braeburn shouted in alarm.
"Scatter!" Zrion bellowed. The squad split in half and dived in either direction, forcing them to break off their attack for the moment. Needless to say, it was a tight fit, and Zrion and Mendoza ended up a tangled mess as Genesis tore past.
"Dammit, Zrion, you're heavy," Mendoza groaned, shoving his commander off him. Ignoring his smartass sergeant, Zrion was the first to climb back to his feet, looking around quickly to assess the situation.
"Alright, one bastard got through, another still in front. Braeburn, Thompson, take the humans. Mendoza, with me, we're gonna get the Metal Head. Move!" Zrion urged.
Mendoza, knowing by now to stay on Zrion's blind side when they teamed up, positioned himself on the left while Zrion took the right. Moving quickly, the two pursed Genesis down the corridor. Unfortunately, he already had quite a lead, and any shots they took were usually at his tail as it vanished around a corner.
"Fucking...Heavy...Armor," Mendoza complained between pants.
"Still lighter than what the regulars wear," Zrion grunted, similarly out of breath. He was no slouch, but he'd never been much of a runner, and the armor certainly wasn't helping matters either. Still, given the choice, he'd rather stay protected and weighed down than light and vulnerable. After all, you couldn't run faster than a bullet no matter what you were wearing.
Okay, this isn't working, Zrion thought. Even if Genesis hadn't already been ahead of them, he was still faster. Time to put his officer training to work.
"This is Angel Team to Fortress Command," Zrion radioed, without slowing down.
"Fortress Command, go ahead," the com officer acknowledged.
"Metal Head broke through, we're in pursuit but it's too fast. We need something up ahead to intercept."
"Affirmative, we've got a lock on your position. Security station reports a couple of turrets up ahead. Bringing them online now."
"That oughta do it," Mendoza remarked.
Zrion scowled. "Mendoza, what's rule number three?" He prodded.
"Fate is a fickle bitch and we shouldn't tempt her," Mendoza recited. "Point taken, sir."
Given the numerical superiority of Metal Heads, the KG had long sought methods of increasing firepower with fewer boots on the ground, and automated defenses were a promising endeavor. However, on-board targeting systems were both expensive and inefficient, and incapable of coordinating with one another. Because of this, unlike soldiers, turrets were unable to support each other in battle, and simply fired at hostile targets until they were destroyed. An intelligent enemy could easily exploit this weakness.
The solution was a prototype AI known as the Advanced Defense Operator and Network Interface Specialist, or ADONIS for short. By placing all turret guns on a single network under the control of a single entity, not only would they be more deadly in combat, but they would also be capable of effectively coordinating with soldiers. The eventual hope for this line of development was a fully self-contained defensive system capable of supplementing defensive lines in the field. ADONIS was still a prototype, however, and had only recently been integrated into the Fortress Security Network for testing. As far as making the best of a bad situation, a combat situation would be an excellent way to evaluate the AI's performance.
Up ahead of Genesis and the pursuing soldiers, two floor-mounted turrets suddenly sprang up on either side of the corridor, quad-barrel Gatling Guns poking out from between the inch-thick armor plates. ADONIS scanned the target area for a split-second, recognized the IFF modules installed in the soldiers' armor that identified them as friendlies, and then locked on to the approaching Metal Head. A loud whir rang out as the guns spun themselves up, and transformed into a steady roar as streaks of Red Eco began to fly down the corridor at a rate of over 1,200 rounds per minute.

"Heh, what nice toys they got here." Genesis said to himself with a smirk.
The Metal Head soon disappeared in a flash of purple, leaving his 'ram' to get torn into pieces by the turrets' red eco fire. Genesis soon reappeared between the two with a smug grin.
"I love to play hide n seek!" Gensis growled before uprooting the turret to his left and heaving it down the hall. "But I hate hiding!"
With another low growl, Genesis ran off in Zrion's direction, along with the turret he recently up rooted. Games were only his style when it mattered, to him though, right now wasn't the time for games. He was on the tight schedule and decided he'd rather keep running until he met back up with Pyrius and Tonus.

Pyrius scanned the hall, quickly assessing the situation. "Better yet, let's just go ahead and go to one first and then the other. I don't remember security being this tight. New units or something." Pyrius looked at the scattered guards down the hall and decided against going against them directly. "Let's take out the main comm station first, then go for the backup if possible." He looked at Tonus, waiting for a response. Despite the violence, Pyrius still felt awkward down here. Being here was like being in his old life again. That feeling of never being able to get out, of never seeing the ones he loves. "Let's hurry up and get this done."

"Hey, Tommy!" Braeburn called out.
"What? And stop calling me that!" he said impatiently.
"Bet I can kill them before you!"
"Ha! You're on!" the medic said confidently, hoisting his rifle and firing a long burst toward the two humans on their side of the hallway. Braeburn joined in a moment later, ensuring a veritable wave of supersonic lead was hurling toward their opponents.
Despite their dark words, both soldiers knew that the bravado was largely empty. Even knowing the humans were their enemies wouldn't make it much easier to live with themselves after striking them down. But, to borrow a maxim from Zrion, "If you can't make the bad thoughts go away, at least you can make fun of them while they're there."
Meanwhile, on the other side of the corridor, Zrion was starting to feel like a bullfighter as he dodged Genesis again, the streaks of Red Eco flying between the two soldiers after him, seemingly without effect. At least the Metal Head had retreated back the way he had come, and further from the vital systems that were deeper in the fortress.
"Alright, Braeburn and Thompson are still back there, so we'll catch him in the middle!" Zrion ordered. "Move it!"
Reluctantly, both soldiers broke into a run after the charging Metal Head. Running in their armor was exhausting, but at least they were used to it, so they wouldn't tire out too quickly. Besides, in the tight corridors of the fortress, there weren't many places to run anyway.
"Thompson, Braeburn," Zrion radioed. "The big bastard's on his way back, so watch your asses."
"Got it," Thompson acknowledged. "Hey Brae, dibs on the Metal Head," he addressed his partner.
"Ha! I knew you were squeamish about shooting people," Braeburn said smugly.
"Yeah well, dig around in enough guts and you get an appreciation for how nasty it is to shoot people. Don't have to worry about that with Metal Heads," the medic retorted.
"Fair enough," Braeburn grunted. "Look alive! He's almost here!"
Spinning around at Braeburn's warning, Thompson saw that the Metal Head was hurling toward them like a speeding train. With a startled yelp, Thompson fired wildly, sending bullets toward Genesis, many of which ricocheted off the steel walls and bounced around the corridor.
"Tom, I believe the goal is to shoot the Metal Head!" Braeburn snarked, as he continued trying to pin down Genesis' accomplices.
"Screw you! That thing is fucking fast!" Thompson hissed back as he adjusted his aim and continued to fire at the rampaging Metal Head.

"Get the fuck outta my way!" Genesis roared as he increased his speed in Thompson's. Purple lightning from his Dark Eco enabled form latching briefly to the walls and ceiling, his body starting to glow. "You hurt either of my friends and that might just be the last thing you'll do!"
Tonus yelped in pain and ducked into a nearby room, a bullet tore straight through his good leg. He kept his hands pressed against the wound while scooting himself up against a wall. Tonus was too exhausted to even start his Green Eco, the bullet wound just making exhaustion seem a little less then it should. A silent curse towards adrenaline was his answer at the moment.
"Pyrius!" Tonus tried to get the attention of his ally. "Go on ahead! I'm not going to be much use like this."
"Like a rat in a cage....." Genesis muttered as his claws left more and more ground.

Pytius ran to Tonus. "What you think I am, a complete emotionless user. I got you in this mess, I'll help get you out." He helped Tonus up and, looking at the doorway, took out a small device Torn gave him before leaving. "Once I activate this, we will have only 20 seconds to get to the end of the hall before it goes out. Think you can wobble on your other leg if I support you?" He then set the device to prepare for activation, and then threw it on the floor. Before it landed, he threw a blast of yellow eco down the hall for distraction. When the device hit, a small eco shield popped up, and Pyrius yelled "Go now!"

"Precursors! Hit the deck!" Braeburn shouted in a panic as the wave of Yellow Eco shot down the corridor toward them. Both Thompson and Braeburn broke off their attack and dived for cover, and the beam missed them by inches as it soared overhead.
Of course, it was just in time to greet Zrion and Mendoza, who had been hot on Genesis' tail just moments before, and were now directly in the line of fire. Shouting a curse, Zrion dropped his rifle and extended both arms, his body flaring with Red Eco as a clumsy barrier formed in front of him and Mendoza.
The beam struck barely a second later, and Zrion grunted at effort as the attack battered his hastily-made shield. Fortunately, it held, since what Zrion lacked in finesse he made up for in raw power, and he dropped the shield a moment later, the smell of ozone and singed flesh filling his nose.
He quickly bent down to scoop up his rifle again, raising it to his shoulder as he surveyed the situation. The eco attack had been a diversion, it seemed - a distraction for some sort of shield that had just sprang up between the soldiers and Genesis' accomplices. Faintly, he could hear one of the humans shouting orders for another to make a break for it. Zrion scowled. Not if he had anything to say about it.
Of course, there was still Genesis to worry about, but assuming the shield was solid, he was trapped on this side with the soldiers for now. Making up his mind quickly, Zrion started to shout orders. "Squad, keep Genesis busy! I'm going to take down that shield!" Zrion barked.
While his soldiers turned to focus fire on Genesis, hopefully keeping him busy enough for Zrion to work, the commander made a break for the glowing shield ahead of them, sliding to a stop in front of it a moment later. He frowned as he looked it over. Definitely not a KG innovation, so it was probably worth recovering it for analysis.
Reaching for his Red Eco again, Zrion glowed with a furious red aura as he raised both his arms, and slammed his fists into the shield. He grunted in pain as his knuckles struck the barrier, but with the eco strengthening his bones, there was little risk of actual damage. As for the shield, it seemed to flicker and dim, but did not collapse under the strain.
Slightly miffed at the resilience of the contraption, Zrion glared and dug deeper, bringing out more of his power and causing the glow to intensify. With a loud roar, he repeated the action, and this time, the shield gave way, collapsing with a deafening 'crack' as the barrier shattered and and burnt out the projector.
Hoisting his rifle again, Zrion pressed forward, taking aim at Pyrius and squeezing off another burst in his direction.
