"Yeah, go for it dude." Marcus said, flipping the lid up.
Then, as if Monica had been listening for her que, stumbled in. "Daddy," Monica cooed. She hugged him around the middle, and then spotted the box. "Doughnuts?"
"Yeah, chocolate and with sprinkles." Marcus said, spinning the box so she could grab at her favorite kind easier, then sat himself down, taking one himself.
"Thank you," She said, pulling a chair out, and then sitting up on her knees to reach the middle of the table. She took a couple of bites, and then started her morning tangent. "We'll probably go train today, like we have for a couple of weeks. Zephan let's me eat breakfast, and then we would go. I wonder if I'll learn new stuff today, since I can make an ok shield now."
"Every day for weeks?" Marcus asked in between bites. "That sounds intense."
"But it's a little fun, and I like learning how to do it. If you and Zrion go, or you or Zrion, it should be more fun. The forest is so nice and quite in the morning too."

"Yeah, wonder how long that'll last," Zephan said dryly as he made his own appearance. When he saw the doughnuts, his expression became conflicted. On one hand, doughnuts made his fur sticky, even if it was only his hands. It was rather annoying cleaning them afterwards. On the other hand, free food, so with a shrug he grabbed one as well.
Not to be left out, Zrion secured a pair for himself, and idly dipped one in his coffee as he sat down at the table before beginning to eat. "We won't be that bad," Zrion told Zephan. "We'll just let you two work, promise."
Zephan raised an eyebrow. "You say that now, but I've seen what happens when two guys with testosterone issues and a point of contention get together in the presence of said point of contention. It's not pretty."
"There was probably a better way you could've phrased that," Zrion commented.
To his credit, Zephan didn't so much as blink. "Was there?" he asked innocently.
Zrion rolled his eyes, and refused to take the bait. He could see a lure like that from a mile away. "Well, when everyone's done being snarky -"
"Well, I had more, but you go ahead," Zephan interrupted.
"-We can go ahead and leave," Zrion finished, without so much as missing a beat.

Monica licked her fingers clean of the frosting, and jumped up, ready to start, and maybe show off a little.
"But there's still at least a half a dozen doughnuts in here." Marcus complained. What fun would it be to watch her daughter do a bunch of inner concentration, even if it was important and wonderful that she did it so well.
"Come one Dad, we'll finish it later. I get hungry after practicing anyway." She said, pulling at his hand.
Marcus sighed and shoved the rest of his doughnut into his mouth. "You don't even have your shoes on. And grab a jacket, it's supposed to rain."
Monica gave an exaggerated sigh, and went to her room to pull her shoes on, and grabbed a sweatshirt. "Can we go now?" She asked, walking down the hallway as she zipped up her jacket.

As Zrion made his way to his own room to finish getting ready, he caught the tail end of Marcus' words to Monica. Hearing him fuss over her, insisting that she bring a jacket because of the rain, reminded him that, for all he had done for Monica, he really wasn't parenting material. If Marcus had never entered the picture, Monica would have had a good life, but not quite a content one. Though Zrion felt a bit slighted by Marcus' presence, he had to admit that he did add a crucial aspect to Monica's life that he himself could not provide.
He strapped his pistol to his chest and slipped his jacket on around his shoulders, ensuring his weapon and tattoos were safely hidden from sight. After pulling on a pair of boots, Zrion made his way out, meeting up with Zephan and the Lorenzo pair waiting near the door.
Now that they were all good and ready, they made their way toward the forest. For Zephan and Monica, it was a very familiar path by now, less so for Zrion, and especially for Marcus. It was an ironic reversal, as the two that usually took the backseat were now leading the way.
Once they reached the forest, Zephan and Monica quickly fell into a typical routine, which was nowhere near as exciting as generating shields and healing wounds. Instead it was a lot of meditation, repetition, and lecturing. Less than an hour after arriving, Marcus and Zrion were already bored out of their minds.
Zrion slid down into a sitting position against a nearby tree, giving Monica and Zephan room to work. For a moment, he thought about trying meditation himself, but he quickly dismissed the idea as laughable. Meditation wasn't really his forte, he just shot things.
"So, any ideas?" Zrion asked Marcus, who was looking similarly bored.

Marcus shook his head, sighing. How could they endure this crap?
He also slid down a tree, and looked up into the leaves. That's what Haven needed, more trees.
"Is your eco any more exciting? Yellow right? Blow anything up lately?"

"Nope," Zrion said dully. "Last thing I blew up was a Metal Head patrol outside the strip mine...a couple months ago? I don't use it often, don't usually need it." Zrion briefly considered asking Marcus if he had 'outran' anything lately, but somehow that didn't seem very proper.
However, his mind was already hatching an idea on staving off their boredom. "Okay, how about this," Zrion ventured. "I shoot a fireball at a target, say that rock over there, and we see if you can reach something equally far away before it hits. A race of sorts, but not one that's obviously stacked against me."

That sounded better than sitting around, and it would give him some eco exercise.
"Yeah, that rock over there?" Marcus asked, standing back up. His eco blazed through him, and he pulled it back. "Ready when you are."

"Alright...Ready....Go!" Zrion called out. He immediately flared up with yellow eco, having already reached for it ahead of time, and he thrust his arm toward the rock, unleashing a large fireball aimed directly toward it. It crossed the distance within seconds, crashing into it and leaving a sizable scorch mark.
He allowed the eco to slip away from him, feeling a bit empty at the loss as he always did, as he surveyed the results of his work. He then looked around for Marcus, wondering if he'd managed to reach his destination before the fireball did.

When Marcus gauged the distance of the rock, he picked an object in the opposite direction that was at least twice as far away, just to give him an edge. Anyway, he had an evil habit of not exactly looking where he was going when he was in that mode, so he wasn't sure that he wouldn't slam into a tree.
When Zrion gave the signal, Marcus let his eco blaze, reaching his extended distance just in time to watch the fireball explode against the rock. He gave Zrion a little wave and a grin. Sometimes Marcus could be a sore winner.

"Alright," Zrion said, considering the situation. "Round two. Same deal." He waited for Marcus to get back into position, before giving the go again.
Just because Zrion didn't have any formal training didn't mean that he didn't know a few tricks. The second the words left his mouth, he extended his arm again. Only this time, instead of a fireball, a needle-thin lance of yellow eco, burning with an intensity that far surpassed the fireball from before, sprang from his palm. It closed the distance almost instantly, easily melting through three feet of solid rock and severing the top half of the boulder, causing it to slide to the ground with a loud thud. The entire process had taken less than two seconds.
He sent Marcus a smirk of his own. If Marcus wanted to be smug, Zrion would repay in kind.
On the other side of the clearing, Zephan sighed in annoyance. "See? I told you," he said to Monica. "You get two idiots with dominance issues together, give them eco abilities, and suddenly all that talk about 'respecting your power' goes right out the window."
